Job Summary
The Warehouse Supervisor is a working leader responsible for supervising warehouse operations while remaining actively involved in day-to-day execution. This role combines the accountability and people leadership of the Supervisor role with the hands-on coordination and task assignment responsibilities traditionally performed by a Lead Hand.
The Warehouse Supervisor leads by example on the floor, directing Shipper/Receivers during the shift, prioritizing work, monitoring freight flow, and ensuring safe, efficient execution across Indoor, Outdoor/Yard, and AWSA-certified Agrichemical areas. This individual is accountable for shift performance, team behavior, safety, and operational results in a fast-paced, high-volume, seasonal environment.
Responsibilities
Operational Leadership & Execution
- Direct, coordinate, and actively participate in daily warehouse activities including receiving, shipping, picking, staging, cross-docking, and yard operations.
- Plan, prioritize, and assign work based on daily volume, facility priorities, and staffing levels.
- Monitor freight flow within the facility and communicate status, constraints, and priorities to leadership and adjacent operations.
- Support all areas of the Distribution Centre as required, including peak seasonal and building depot (structures) operations.
- Maintain organization, housekeeping, and standard work practices throughout the warehouse and yard.
People Leadership & Accountability
- Supervise and lead Shipper/Receivers during the assigned shift, setting clear expectations for performance, behavior, and safety.
- Hold team members accountable through real-time coaching, corrective action, and recognition.
- Train, coach, and mentor employees to build capability, engagement, and ownership.
- Develop Shipper/Receivers into competent, safe equipment operators by supporting structured and on-the-job training.
- Act as the first point of escalation for operational or personnel issues during the shift.
Safety, Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure strict adherence to safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, including WHMIS, TDG, and AWSA standards.
- Promote a strong safety culture by leading hazard identification, safe work practices, and incident reporting.
- Ensure all required operational and compliance documentation is completed accurately and on time.
- Operate material handling equipment as required and ensure equipment is used safely and properly.
Performance Management & Continuous Improvement
- Track productivity, quality, service, and safety metrics and address gaps in real time.
- Identify inefficiencies and actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to layout, processes, and staffing.
- Collaborate with Inventory Control and Warehouse Administration to support inventory accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
- Communicate effectively across shifts and departments to ensure smooth handoffs and operational continuity.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent.
- 2–5 years of experience in a warehouse or distribution centre environment, with demonstrated leadership responsibility.
- Hands-on warehouse, yard, and forklift/material handling equipment experience.
- Proven ability to lead teams while performing operational work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to provide clear direction and feedback.
- Experience with WMS systems and inventory control processes is an asset.
- Background in agriculture or agribusiness is an asset.
- Previous supervisory or lead hand experience required.
- WHMIS and TDG Knowledge is an asset.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Capable of performing physical labour, including lifting, standing, and working outdoors as required.
- Works in a 200,000 sq. ft. warehouse environment, including a 50,000 sq. ft. AWSA-certified agrichemical section.
- Seasonal peak operations from April to October with increased yard and building depot activity.
- Shift-based role requiring active presence on the warehouse floor and outdoor yard.
Safety-Sensitive Position
This is a safety-sensitive position. The successful candidate must be able to safely operate company equipment and will be required to complete and pass a drug and alcohol screening as a condition of employment.
